Restoration 19th-century Biedermeier secretaire

Just some of our recent projects...

Conservation restoration of Dutch Colonial chest circa 1780

We just finished conservation work on this exquisite chest and our customer was over the moon when he picked it up today. We used special traditional conservation methods to clean, revive and restore the piece back to it's former glory.

Conservation restoration late-Victorian Tasmanian blackwood billiards scoring cabinet

We are told there was only ever 20 made by Alcock & Co Melbourne. Extensive repair work was required to replace half of the little coloured timber buttons which were missing as well as repairing many breaks, cracks and damage around the cabinet. The original finish was in fair condition and required traditional conservation techniques to restore the cabinet back to its former glory. The original finish, colour and patina was retained in the restoration process.

Restoration 19th century Biedermeier secretaire

This fantastic secretaire was in really bad shape when we received it. The top was buckled, broken and warped. The heavy large door at the front was weight-controlled by a large internal lead weight which was broken and required major repair work to get working correctly again. The internal frame structure was broken and the piece required multiple veneer repairs to missing and broken sections of mahogany veneer. All drawers, runners and legs also required repair work. The easy part was French polishing the piece back to its former glory.

Australian Edwardian Kauri Dressing Table c1905

Restoration of Australian Edwardian wing mirror dressing table c1905, for Wynette from Narrabeen. Restoration involved washing back the finish, touching up all the marks and faded areas and traditionally hand polishing to retore. Drawer repairs and mirror frame repairs were also carried out.

Repair Collapsed Mahogany Extension Table c1860

John from Epping was very concerned when his beloved 1860s mahogany extension table started collapsing in the centre. We discovered the table extension rails had become twisted over time and there were several breaks and cracks. After extensive repair work and rebuilding sections of the rails, we returned the extension table back to John in perfect working order. John was extremely happy with our work.

Australian Queensland maple extension table c1920

We just restored this beautiful Queensland maple extension table for Ingrid from Cheltenham. Ingrid was over the moon at how well the table was restored when we delivered it back to her house. The table required full restoration and detailed repair work to the top because all the old joints had come apart. We dismantled and rebuilt the whole extension system and top as part of the restoration. The table top had been poorly restored and stained many years ago but luckily some sections of the legs still retained the original colour polish, so we were able to replicate the original colour of the table top  and traditionally hand polish the table back to its former glory.

Victorian Rosewood Chest of Drawers c1870

This Victorian rosewood chest of drawers looked worse for wear when our client dropped it off. All the drawers were running poorly, missing sections of rosewood veneer all over it and broken plinth molding. It was also missing several sections of cock beading and most of the knobs required repair work as well. Once all the repairs were complete we traditionally French polished the chest back its former glory. Our client was very happy that all the drawers were working normally again.

William IV Mahogany Sofa Table c1830

Recent conservation and repair work to this beautiful 1830s William IV mahogany sofa table for Ann from Warrawee in Sydney. Ann was extremely pleased with our work on this piece and we just received a very nice thank you letter from her. For us, this was just a little job, under a days work, but we are thrilled that Ann appreciated our work on this project. It meant a lot to her and this makes us happy 🙂

Australian Cedar Chest of Drawers circa 1870.

It's amazing the difference it can make having drawers that work and look perfect. When Sue brought in her beautiful cedar chest of drawers for repair most of the drawers were jammed, broken and worn right out. The runners, guides and drawer stops were also worn out and not in square alignment. Conservation work to conserve the original finish and patina required only cleaning and waxing to restore. Sue was ecstatic to finally see her beautiful chest of drawers back to its former glory with all drawers running perfectly. No more grinding and scraping.

Restoration Italian travelers trunk c1900

The original lining was deteriorated but the customers Great Grandfathers signature was still visible. The signature is now beautifully feature inside the trunk and behind it is a special air-flow panel designed to prevent condensation affecting the frail signature. The hessian covering the trunk was also deteriorated and required replacing and re-painting. I also re-lined the interior of the trunk by hand using an antique style canvas.
